what is classical pilates?
Classical Pilates is a comprehensive system of integrated exercises developed by Joseph Pilates and preserved through a lineage of master teachers. The method progresses from foundational to advanced work and is designed to engage the entire body. Integration, rather than isolation, is a defining principle of the Classical approach. Exercises are performed in a specific sequence with low repetitions, emphasizing precision, control, breath, rhythm, and flow. This systematic structure develops strength, endurance, mobility, and coordination while promoting efficient, balanced movement.

Classical Pilates can be practiced on the mat or on traditional apparatus such as the Reformer, Cadillac, and Wunda Chair, as well as smaller, lesser-known pieces of equipment including the Toe Corrector and Foot Corrector. Mastery of the Classical Pilates requires years of dedicated study and practice. Traditional Classical Pilates is not simply an exercise class—it is a disciplined movement rooted in intention, integrity, and respect for the original method.

about Mary Jo Stacks
PILATES INSTRUCTOR
With a BS in Kinesiology from Michigan State University and over 30 years of experience as a Physical Education teacher, I have spent my career mastering the science of movement. My Pilates journey began in 1999 under the mentorship of the legendary Mari Winsor, eventually leading me to amass over 1,500 hours of rigorous training through the New York Guild and USPA.
Deeply committed to the direct lineage of Joseph Pilates, I continue my advanced studies through Romana’s Pilates and master instructors like Kathi Ross Nash. Since opening my own studio in 2015, I have combined my graduate-level work in Biomechanics with classical technique to empower my clients to move with enduring strength, resilience, and grace.
